About NSLM

The National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM), located in historic Middleburg, Virginia, is dedicated to preserving, promoting and sharing the literature, art and culture of equestrian, angling and field sports. Founded in 1954, the organization houses over 26,000 books dating from the 16th through the 21st Centuries. The Museum displays fine art from the NSLM permanent collection as well as rotating temporary loan exhibitions. The permanent collection includes paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and decorative arts by American, British and European artists ranging from the 17th to 21st centuries. Educational programming includes a wide variety of lectures, gallery talks, school tours, workshops, and special programs.
NSLM's Archival collections cover the lives and history of prominent sporting enthusiasts from the 19th Century through the 20th Century. These collections include historical photographs, scrapbooks, letters, documents, posters, programs, and other pieces of ephemera. Through the efforts of interns through the NSLM Archive Internship Program, public access to these collections is being promoted while providing an opportunity for participants to learn principles of archival practice and digital preservation.

About Internships at NSLM

The NSLM Internship Program provides learning opportunities for students and recent graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in museums, libraries or archives. Interns work directly with staff on a variety of projects and gain hands-on experience with our Library and Museum collections and programming. Projects are assigned based on departmental needs, and the interns' professional skills, interests and career goals.
The NSLM Library Department is seeking interns to assist with reprocessing its sizable archive collection. Under the direction of senior staff, interns will gain hands-on archival experience as materials are organized and transported to the Library's new archives storage space. Interns will work directly with the Librarian to create finding aids for materials. Interns will draw upon archival materials to curate an online exhibition for display to the public via the NSLM website, blog, or social media platforms. Opportunities are available year-round.
