After seeing Reeves’ paintings at the Roosevelt Raceway, Jay Samuel Perlman, publisher of the "Daily Racing Form", commissioned Reeves to paint Armed, the 1947 Horse of the Year. The painting was then featured in full color in the April 12, 1948 issue of "Life" magazine, gaining Reeves recognition and igniting his career. He received many commissions shortly after the magazine was published.

This black and white photograph of the painting was stored by Reeves in an album along with other photos of his early works.
